Is this a NEW tax?
No RAISE IN TAXES! This is a renewal tax millage to
continue present funding levels for our public schools. The current
millages expire at the end of 2008.
Do all public schools benefit?
Yes. Revenues generated by the millage
funds ALL schools, that includes Recovery School District, Orleans Parish
School Board, and Charter operated Schools. The millage funds virtually
every aspect of public education, from textbooks and supplies to teacher
salaries, and facilities maintenance.
Where Does The Money Go?
Of the $32 million raised by the millage renewal, priorities include:
Proposition A
$3.9 million for new textbooks, technology and materials
Proposition B
$3.9 million for Pre-K intervention and dropout programs
Proposition C
$18.4 million for teachers to maintain competitive salaries and benefits
Proposition
$5.8 million for repairs, maintenance and facility safety features
What Happens if the Millage is not Renewed?
If the millage is note renewed, every charter and traditional public school will lose approximately $1000 per pupil annually.
How does this millage impact recovery efforts in the city?
Tremendous progress is being made in the rebuilding of our school system. A Master Planning process has been initiated and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2008. Millage renewal is important because our schools are catalysts for community redevelopment and a linchpin for neighborhoods in recovery.
